About Brookhaven

Before it was a popular residential area, Brookhaven was Creek Indian land. The first non-Indian settler to the area was Harris Goodwin. Goodwin hailed from South Carolina and eventually created a homestead on what is now Peachtree Road. Later Goodwin’s family also relocated to the area. Although the original Goodwins passed away in the 1800s, the family home and graveyard are still in existence.

Due to its history, Brookhaven was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in the 1980s. In fact, on the national register it lists Brookhaven as the “first planned club community in Georgia.” Today, Brookhaven is home to two superiorly cared for golf courses.

Some of the best public school in Brookhaven includes North Atlanta High School, Sutton Middle School, and Sarah Smith Elementary School. For higher education needs, Brookhaven is also home to Oglethorpe University.
